7 Indian Exam Tech You Didn't Know

India's Education System: A Look at the Technologies Used and Cheating Scandals

India's education system is vast, with 1.48 million schools and a range of prestigious colleges, such as the IITs, which consistently rank in the top 500 globally. The country's education system has been adopting new technologies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, to enhance the examination process and prevent cheating. However, recent scandals, such as the NEET exam controversy, have brought attention to the vulnerabilities in the system and the lengths some students will go to gain an unfair advantage.

Examination Process and Cheating Prevention

India takes exam integrity very seriously, and the process of conducting and evaluating exams is rigorous. For major exams, teachers are randomly assigned answer sheets with no identifying student information, ensuring anonymity. To prevent cheating, roll numbers are used instead of names, and answer sheets are coded to match student information stored separately.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards digital evaluation methods. Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets are now commonly used, allowing for computerized checking. Special scanners, costing around Rs 25 to 300, can extract answers from 60 sheets in just one minute. This technology also explains the preference for black pens in exams, as the scanners detect the black ink more effectively.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, remote proctoring software became essential. Students sat for exams in front of webcams, which used AI technology to detect suspicious behavior, such as looking away from the screen or attempting to switch tabs. This ensured that even at home, students were monitored effectively to prevent cheating.

Cheating Scandals and Their Impact

Despite these rigorous measures, India has recently been rocked by cheating scandals. In the NEET exams, eight students from the same center achieved perfect scores, and a total of 67 students scored 720 out of 720 marks, raising suspicions. Pre-marked answer sheets were discovered in Rajasthan, indicating a potential leak. The checking agency, NTS, claimed that grace marks were given, but the incident has sparked widespread concern and is currently being investigated by the Supreme Court.

Cheating scandals can have a significant impact on the lives of honest students, and the consequences are far-reaching. In response, India has implemented strict laws, such as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. This act enforces harsh penalties for those caught cheating, including up to 10 years of imprisonment, fines ranging from Rs 1 to 10 million, and bans from taking exams or obtaining government jobs.

Innovative Technologies for Examinations

To combat cheating and improve the examination process, India has embraced innovative technologies. One example is the use of 360-degree cameras mounted on headphones, which record the student's surroundings during the exam. This allows invigilators to monitor the student's behavior and ensure they are not being assisted by others.

Additionally, in the time of COVID-19, the idea of using AI cameras and software to allow students to take exams from home gained traction. This technology can detect and prevent cheating by tracking the student's eye movements and surrounding activities.

Conclusion

While India's education system faces challenges, including cheating scandals, the country is actively adopting new technologies to enhance the examination process and prevent unfair practices. The combination of traditional and innovative methods, along with strict laws, aims to ensure the integrity of exams and protect the hard work of honest students.

As India continues to improve its education system, it is crucial to stay vigilant against cheating and adapt to new technologies that can enhance the security and fairness of examinations.
